Legal Dictionary of Terms and Jargon Explained.

Acquittal

Legal term: This is when a defendant is discharged of an charges following the verdict or direction of not guilty by a judge.

Act

The written law of a country, also called a statute. An Act sets out legal rules, and has normally been passed by both Houses of Parliament in the form of a Bill and agreed to by the Crown.

Ad Idem

Means ‘of the same mind’. Latin phrase used in law to mean that the parties are of the same mind and understand each other or agree with each other and the situation, e.g the parties are ad idem on this statement.

Ad infinitum

A legal Latin term used in the UK legal system to mean "infinity". In context, it usually means "continue forever, without limit" or a set of instructions to be repeated "forever".

adeem

This is where a gift is made in a Last will and testament and is revoke or taken away within the lifetime of the testator. This may be unintentional, but the result is the same. 

e.g. A farther leaves his son his Jaguar E-Type in his will. Before the farther passes away the car is involved in an accident and with the insurance money he buys a Lotus ES300. 

As the jaguar no longer exists it can not be passed on to the son when the farther passes away if the gift is worded as a Jaguar E-Type. But if the will mentioned that the son will get the latest automobile the farther owned then he will inherit the Lotus ES300 car. See Get a Last will and testament


Adjournment

This is where there is a temporary postponement of legal proceedings. This can be requested by either side.

Administration order

Legal term: An order by a County Court directing a debtor to pay a specified monthly instalment into Court in respect of outstanding debts. The Court retains the payments made and at intervals distributes it between the creditors on a pro-rata basis.

Administrative Court

Legal term: The Administrative Court deals with applications for judicial review. It is connected and part of the High Court.

Administrator

Someone who is appointed by the legal system to settle your outstanding affairs if you are intestate, that is you die without leaving a last will and testament. See Get a Last will and testament


Admiralty Court

Legal term: The Admiralty Court deals with claims for the arrest of a ship at sea to satisfy an outstanding debt. It is connected and part of the High Court.
